Green Tree Snakes live in Northern and Eastern Australia, seen just about anywhere from backyards to parks to inner city gardens. Despite the name, they can also be blue, yellow or black and has a pale yellow throat and underbelly. They can grow to 2m long and are swift climbers, hence often seen up veranda beams and railings or climbing up sheds and garages. As the name suggests, Green Tree Snakes spend a lot of time in trees, as in Harriet Scott’s illustration for “Snakes of Australia” (1869). Green Tree Snakes are activing during daytime, sunbathing and hunting on the ground. They locate their prey by smell, using their heads to push through loose soil and leaves to find frogs, skinks, geckos, lizards, reptile eggs, small mammals, stranded tadpoles and fish. Humans consider Green Tree Snakes non-venomous, though fangs at the back of their mouth do secrete a mild venom to help digest their prey as their sharp angled teeth ‘chew’ their prey down the oesophagus.
When night falls, they sleep in tree hollows, rock crevices, narrow caves or abandoned buildings congregating together in winter to conserve heat.
The sizes correspond to a smaller size in the US market, so US customers should order a size up.
